The mineral hardness scale was established by the German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs in the early 1800’s. He based the scale on ten common minerals ranging from talc, the softest mineral on the scale, to diamond, the hardest. Each mineral on the scale will scratch the mineral below it and will be scratched by the mineral above it.

Fingernails have a hardness of about 2.5. Steel knife blades rate a 6.5 and glass shows up on the scale at about 5.5. Metal files have a hardness of about 6.5. Quartz stands at 7 on the scale.

There a a number of things to consider as you choose your Topaz Gemstone Rings and other jewelry.  One of these is hardness of stone.

A mineral’s hardness is determined by scratching it with an object or another mineral of known hardness.  Mineralogist Friedrick Mohs (1773-1839) developed a set of reference minerals ranging from hardness 1 (talc) to hardness 10 (diamond).  Some everyday objects can also be used aas references:  a fingernail (2.5), copper coin (3.5), glass (5.5), or a steel knife (6.5).  Hardness is a destructive test, as it leaves a scratch.  Minerals below a hardness of 7 are unsuitable for everyday wear as gemstone jewelry.

The topaz gemstone has a hardness of 8 according to Moh’s scale.

Topaz Gemstone Earrings are a wonderful addition to any jewelry wardrobe.

Topaz was one of the stones in the ‘Breastplate of Judgement’ of Aaron, described in the Bible.   There were 12 stones, one for each of the 12 tribes of Israel.
